Lo scoiattolo rosso andrebbe incontro dapprima ad estinzioni locali, come sta avvenendo nei dintorni di Perugia, e, successivamente, ad estinzioni su ampia scala, con gravi ripercussioni anche per gli ecosistemi forestali di cui lo scoiattolo comune è un tassello unico. Ad oggi, in seguito alle prime analisi effettuate, è possibile affermare che nell’arco di 30 anni lo scoiattolo grigio potrebbe raggiungere l’Appennino Umbro-Marchigiano, zona di Gualdo Tadino e, in 40 anni, occupare quasi la metà della superficie regionale. Qualora venissero confermate le segnalazioni della specie alloctona nell’Alta Valle del Tevere, lo scenario nel medio-lungo periodo sarebbe ancora più rapido.
